September 12, 2007 Patty Dorris 573-323-4236, ext. 225 For Immediate Release The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing an environmental assessment (EA) which will address a proposal to construct a stabilized boat ramp and accompanying parking area that would accommodate approximately 10-18 vehicles with boat trailers located upstream from the Van Buren "gap" in the general area of Chilton Creek. Waymeyer Landing will be one of the sites considered. The purpose of the EA is to identify and examine associated issues/problems and develop a set of viable alternatives for addressing these issues. The EA will evaluate each alternative and the potential impacts of all proposed actions. After careful consideration, a preferred alternative will be selected as a result of this process, with the goal of ensuring the protection of the natural and cultural resources within the Chilton Creek area, while providing for an appropriate visitor experience. A scoping letter has been prepared outlining the existing conditions and issues, and the NPS is formally requesting input from the public early in the planning stages of this project. The scoping letter for the Chilton Creek area boat ramp has been posted on the government website. Please visit the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website (https://parkplanning.nps.gov) to submit your comments, or you may submit written comments to the Superintendent, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, P.O. Box 490, Van Buren, MO 63965. Once a draft EA has been prepared, there will be a second opportunity to submit comments during the 30 day review period in early 2008. -NPS- |
