Ossabaw Island Hogs

Petal, the Ossabaw Island Hog.

NPS/Cindy LaBarge

This unique breed of pig is descendent from the hogs brought to the New World by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Pigs are difficult to wrangle and often escaped expeditions. The ancestors of this breed were left on Ossabaw Island, off the coast of Georgia, and evolved independently. Because they are no longer popular among farmers, Ossabaw Island Hogs are considered a critically endangered breed. Historic farms, like Oxon Hill Farm, are some of the only places you can see this heritage breed.
