Cattle

3 cows in a pasture
Tuesday, Bo, and Fanny in the cow pasture.

NPS/JGernatt

Cattle were a popular animal to have on a 19th century farm. They provide milk, meat, and leather. Different types of cattle have been selectively bred over generations to provide certain products. For example, Jersey cattles are great milking cows. They produce milk with a high fat content which is great for making butter. Angus cows are bred to have tasty meat and are a popular choice to be eaten.

Did you know that until a female has her first calf, she is not truly a cow? Instead, we call these heifers. Only one of our herd, Fanny, can call herself a cow.
