Denise Klein has been named as the new budget analyst for the National Park Service (NPS) Wildland Fire Program, replacing Danica Colley who moved to a new NPS position last year. Denise was most recently the NPS Midwest Region’s wildland fire budget analyst, a position she had held since March 2020.
Denise began her career with the NPS Midwest Regional Office (MWRO) in Omaha, NE, in 2001, working as an archives technician in the Cultural Resources Division. In 2010, she became a secretary for the Planning, Construction, Communication and Legislation Division. While there, part of her duties included budget and she gained that skillset. In August 2013, she transitioned to a budget analyst position in the region’s budget office, immediately responding to fiscal year-end closeout needs. She managed the budget for several MWRO divisions, while also assisting park staff in the region.
Mark Koontz, program lead for NPS Wildland Fire Planning and Budget is looking forward to Denise joining the Planning and Budget team. “Her knowledge and technical expertise will be a huge asset to the servicewide wildland fire management program,” he stated.
Denise was lucky to have parents that valued the national parks and visited several NPS sites while growing up. Her love for history and the NPS sites stuck with her. After graduating high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Historic Preservation from Southeast Missouri State University. Following graduation and before moving to the NPS, she worked for a short time as a visitor services representative at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
She currently lives in Omaha, NE with her husband of 19 years, Kevin. They have two children, Caleb (17) and Lily (14), who keep them very busy with football, volleyball, and other school activities.
Denise will begin her new position on April 24, 2023.
