ANCHORAGE, AK— NPS employee Grant Hilderbrand has been selected as the National Park Service Associate Regional Director for Resources, Alaska.
A 12-year veteran of the National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey, Hilderbrand has served as the NPS regional wildlife biologist for the Alaska Region, the Associate Director for Marine Research at the Alaska Science Center of USGS and is currently the NPS Alaska Regional Natural Resource Team Lead. Prior to joining the National Park Service, Grant worked as a wildlife biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for 12 years.
“Grant brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role with the NPS,” said Alaska Regional Director Sarah Creachbaum. “His experience working as a biologist for the state of Alaska, his proven research credentials and his contacts in academia around the world will greatly benefit the parks and communities in the Alaska Region,” Creachbaum said.
Grant earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from Washington State University in 1998 and he and his research team have studied bears, wolves, and salmon in Alaska for nearly three decades. During his time at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Hilderbrand worked with the Kenai Brown Bear Interagency study team, comprised of the State, NPS, USFWS, and USFS. Later his work extended to grizzly bear and wolf studies in the Nelchina Basin.
Hilderbrand is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) North American Bear Expert Team and was chair of the 2016 International Conference on Bear Research and Management. Grant holds affiliate faculty appointments at several universities and over the years has mentored eight graduate students. Grant is also a Fellow of the National Conservation Leadership Institute and an active member of The Wildlife Society.
