Alaska national parks are open for visitation, although the Alaska Regional Office is closed pending damage assessment and clean-up.

On Friday, November 30 at 8:29 am, Anchorage, AK experienced a 7.0
magnitude earthquake. The National Park Service Regional Office in Anchorage received damage. The building was evacuated and employees were sent home. The building is scheduled to reopen on Monday, December 10th.

Regional Director Bert Frost has authorized an incident management team which is coordinating the clean-up and recovery effort. Meanwhile, if you need to speak with an employee who works at the regional office in Anchorage, please contact our 24-hour dispatch at the Alaska Region Communication Center (ARCC) at 907-683-9555.

After an initial assessment, it appears that Alaska’s national parks received no or minimal damage and are open to visitors. Additional assessments, after the winter months, could reveal damage to National Park Service areas and facilities that is not immediately apparent under the current conditions.

On Wednesday, December 5th, all National Park Service areas and offices will be closed for the national day of mourning for President George H.W. Bush.
