Learn about regionally-based Maintenance Action Teams tasked with tackling deferred maintenance projects funded by the Great American Outdoors Act and Legacy Restoration Fund.
The National Park Service dedicated $14.1 million from the fiscal year 2021 Legacy Restoration Fund program to create Maintenance Action Teams. These teams of skilled tradespeople and facilities maintenance experts tackle high-priority deferred maintenance and repair projects at small- and medium-sized parks.
The Maintenance Action Teams are regionally-based in locations with close proximity to multiple park units. These crews improve the National Park Service's ability to implement long-range preservation maintenance plans for assets. This model of work creates operational savings and reduces the total cost of facility ownership and enhances our preventative and recurring maintenance capacity and capabilities.
Not only are Maintenance Action Teams training and assisting park staff across the country, they are also engaging and developing the next generation of park stewards. Thanks to partnerships with Public Land Corps agencies, the teams are hiring military veterans and youth interns. While in the program these interns gain invaluable skills and experiences in the fields of preservation, skilled trades, and facilities maintenance.
