Latino Conservation Week 2020
Latino Conservation Week is an initiative of the Hispanic Access Foundation, which focuses on engaging the Latino community with the National Park Service. These events are held on the local, state, and national levels throughout the United States.
“The goals of LCW is to:
1.) Provide Latino families and youth with outdoor recreation opportunities near their homes.
2.) Demonstrate the Latino community’s commitment to conservation.
3.) Partner with Hispanic community leaders and organizations to support local and national conservation issues.
4.) Inform policymakers, media, and the public of the Latino community’s views on important local and national conservation issues.”
-Information comes from the Latino Conservation Week Website.
The Southeast Archeological Center during Latino Conservation Week strives to engage and educate the public on what is archeology is and why archeology should be important to the community. This year, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, in-person events could not occur.
However, this year SEAC’s event is an online interview series with Latinx archeologists within and outside the National Park Service. These interviews consist of advice, personal experiences, and reasons why archeology should be important to the Latino community. These interviews provide an in-depth look into what does it mean to be Latino and an archeologist in the field. SEAC will also provide a video on how to become a volunteer at SEAC and how to become involved!
Intern with the Latino Heritage Program!
The Latino Heritage Internship Program is a program initiative between the National Park Service and the Hispanic Access Foundation and the Environment for the Americas. The internship program is to provide young adults with the opportunity to work in different professional fields within the National Park Service.
The Southeast Archeological Center, SEAC, has continuously partnered with LHIP to provide young Latinos with the opportunity to work alongside archeologists in the National Park Service and to gain experience in the archeological and curatorial field.
Young professionals are allowed to work in Tallahassee Florida at the archeological center and they are able to gain experience within the Department of the Interior. These interns are included in archeological projects and are given their initiatives within SEAC and the LHIP Program.
The Latino Heritage Internship Program also provides a community of Latinx professionals within the program to network and connect with during the time of their internship. Also, the Latino Heritage Internship Program provides professional workshops and training for interns to help prepare for future professional development within the National Park Service. Not only do LHIP members receive experience within their field, but interns also have the opportunity to present their research in a conference held in DC each year.
