Jeremy Hobson has been selected as the new fire GIS specialist for the National Park Service (NPS) Information Management and Technology Branch under the Division of Fire and Aviation Management (DFAM). You may also wonder if he daylights as a co-host of NPR’s Here & Now... Alas, he does not.

Jeremy transferred to his new position with the National Park Service from a data management specialist position with the US Forest Service. He began his federal career as a SCEP (Student Career Experience Program) with the Forest Service in 2007, upon completing his Master of Science degree. Jeremy worked as a GIS specialist and analyst within the Data Resources Management (DRM) program in Region 6 and provided GIS support for multiple national forests in Oregon including the Willamette, Umpqua, Siuslaw, and Rogue River-Siskiyou. In addition, he supported regional work, assisting the regional monitoring program with various modeling and analysis projects for Northern Spotted Owl and old growth forests. In 2016, Jeremy accepted a detail with the Sawtooth National Forest and had the chance to contribute to the wilderness management plan for two newly designated wilderness areas, the Hemingway-Boulders and Cecil D. Andrus White Clouds Wilderness. That experience ultimately led him to Boise, where he took a detail at NIFC during summer 2017, working with the Wildland Fire Management RD&A group and supporting the Wildland Fire Decision Support System (WFDSS) data management program. He followed that up with a detail on the Boise National Forest during spring 2019, which ultimately evolved into a permanent position in September 2019 as a data management specialist. All told, Jeremy has had multiple opportunities to expand his geospatial skills and contribute to a variety of challenging and innovative projects focused on resource management.

He is qualified as a GISS and has primarily supported Type 3 incidents, as well as serving as a GIS lead for multiple BAER assignments. He is currently seeking qualification as an infrared interpreter (IRIN).

Jeremy holds a Master of Science Degree in Geography from Oregon State University and holds degrees from the University of Oregon and the University of Montana. His nearly 14-year-old lab mix, Tess, thoroughly enjoys food and still manages to chase a ball or two. Jeremy enjoys most all outdoor activities. When away from work, you can find him mountain biking, river paddling, fly fishing, hiking, or backcountry skiing, depending on the season. He also recently purchased an acoustic guitar and hopes to become the next great singer/songwriter. Duty stationed in Boise, Idaho, he entered duty as of June 7, 2020.
