Departments and agencies in the Federal Archeology Program are responsible for the care of archeological resources on their lands or potentially affected by their activities. Their efforts to preserve archeological heritage and promote stewardship include:
- Manage archeological sites in compliance with Federal law
- Issue ARPA Permits for archeological investigations on federal lands to ensure research is appropriate and performed by qualified individuals
- Conduct consultation with tribal and descendant communities and other stakeholders
- Curate and manage collections from archeological investigations on Federal lands
- Evaluate site significance for the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks
- Prevent looting and vandalism through collaboration with law enforcement and development of public education programs
- Educate the public through formal and informal learning opportunities to inspire stewardship
- Develop strategy, such as the National Strategy for Federal Archeology
- Report to Congress on archeological activities about the activities of Federal agencies with archeological responsibilities
