Manage Archeological Sites

Under the National Historic Preservation Act and other legislation, the federal government has a responsibility to identify and document archeological sites on agency-managed lands. These data facilitate responsible research and management of archeological resources. By knowing what their lands hold, federal archeologists can make better decisions for the long-term care of archeological resources.

Federal agencies maintain information about archeological site characteristics in centralized databases and in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) layers. Information management enables federal officials to minimize the impact on archeological resources in the event of infrastructure construction, climate change, and emergencies such as wildfires and flooding. These data also enable federal archeologists to interpret archeological findings and share information about the resources that they manage with the public.
