SANTA FE, New Mexico – Today, the National Park Service (NPS) awarded a $4.2 million contract to MW Morrissey Construction to repair the exterior adobe walls and historic elements of the Old Santa Fe Trail Building, a National Historic Landmark.
MW Morrissey Construction will be working with Oden Construction, Inc., both companies are based in Tucson and specialize in historic preservation. The NPS will work with them to finalize the construction schedule and historic preservation plan. Construction is currently slated to begin early fall.
On June 6, 2018, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced more than $256 million in funding to rebuild critical national park infrastructure. The Old Santa Fe Trail Building was included on the list of projects.
The NPS closed the building to the public in May 2018 to prepare for the upcoming rehabilitation project and allow time to temporarily relocate staff to 120 South Federal Place, Suite 101, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501. Historic artifacts and museum archives from the building have also been temporarily relocated and stored in appropriate facilities.
Because of the potentially hazardous nature of the building materials and other safety concerns, the site will remain closed to the public and to non-official visitors during construction.
The iconic building, the largest in-use adobe office building in the United States, was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a government work program that provided jobs for young, unemployed men during the Great Depression.
