The Pierre and Fort Pierre Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary was produced by the National Park Service's Heritage Education Services and the South Dakota State Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office, in partnership with the South Dakota Heritage Fund and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. The Pierre and Fort Pierre travel itinerary is based primarily on registration information on historic places in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks collections. These archives are kept at 1201 Eye Street NW, Washington, DC and are open to the public.

The itinerary was conceptualized by Jason Haug, Director of Historic Preservation of the South Dakota State Historical Society, with the assistance of Leigh Raderschadt, Preserve America Coordinator with the South Dakota State Historical Society. The itinerary was funded in part through a Preserve America grant administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior and a donation from the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad. Leigh Raderschadt compiled materials for architectural descriptions, wrote contextual essays for the itinerary and took many of the photographs. The historical photographs and postcards used are part of the South Dakota State Archives’ collection. Most of the South Dakota State Capitol photographs are courtesy of South Dakota Tourism, and most of the photographs of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Bridge are courtesy of Rick W. Mills. Some photographs are courtesy of the Pierre Historic Preservation Commission & BPro Inc. Jason Haug; Jay D. Vogt, State Historic Preservation Officer; Paige Hoskinson-Olson, Review and Compliance Coordinator; Jennifer Brosz, Historic Preservation Specialist; Chris Nelson, Historic Preservation Specialist; and Kate Nelson, Restoration Specialist, of the South Dakota State Historical Society's State Historic Preservation Office offered support and editing. Jason Haug provided the GIS files used as the basis for the map in the itinerary.

Carol Shull, Chief, Heritage Education Services, National Park Service managed production and edited the itinerary. Kathleen Ryan and Nissa Vandre, students at Ohio State University, assisted in editing and finalizing the content of the itinerary while part of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs Washington Academic Internship Program. Laura Cryan, student at the George Mason University School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism, and Tamara Wolf, student at American University, also assisted. Hyejung Kwon designed the original computer template for the itineraries as the practicum for her Masters of Tourism Administration (MTA) at George Washington University’s School of Business, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management.   Kathryn Warnes, contractor with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, has adjusted the template.  Amber Young, contractor with the South Dakota Heritage Fund programmed the itinerary into the template.

The itinerary was produced with the support of the National Park Service's Jon Smith, Assistant Associate Director for Heritage Preservation Services; Bryan Mitchell, Chief, Heritage Preservation Services; Paul Loether, Chief, National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks; and Richard O’Connor, Chief, Historical Documentation Programs.  Jeff Joeckel of the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmarks staff provided very valuable advice and assistance in the development of the itinerary, as did John Byrne, the National Register Database Manager, and Alexis Abernathy and Edson Beall of the National Register staff, who facilitated the expeditious listing of the Pierre Masonic Lodge. Deidre McCarthy, James Stein, and Matthew Stutts of NPS's Cultural Resources Geographic Information Systems, Historical Documentation Programs under John Knoerl provided assistance concerning Geographic Information System (GIS) maps used in the itinerary.
