Western Arctic National Parklands Superintendent George Helfrich has announced a moratorium on the issuance of additional commercial use authorizations for big game transportation services in Noatak National Preserve.

The purpose of the moratorium is to improve management of commercial services and address impacts to subsistence users from transportation services.

Big game transportation service providers, or transporters, carry hunters and their equipment into an out of the field. Currently, eight businesses have authorizations transportation services. They are permitted to carry a cumulative maximum of 357 clients per year into the preserve.

Noatak National Preserve lies inside state Game Management Unit 23. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has convened a working group to examine ways to minimize fall hunting season user conflicts in the GMU.

The working group will meet for the next two years. It may provide information useful to a National Park Service management plan for big game transportation services in the preserve.
