Greene's men completed work on the second parallel by June 3 and then continued to press forward by digging the next approach trench. Throughout the siege, work was tiring and backbreaking underneath the blistering June sun. The red clay dirt was described as "soft stone." While soldiers fought with the hard soil with shovel and pick, they also dodged enemy fire. To hinder American progress, Loyalists initiated nightly raids.
