This Thursday, July 6, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park kicks off its 2017 Thursdays in the Park Concert Series from 6:30-7:30 PM with Americana band Slow Boat Home. The concert series takes place Thursday evenings during the summer starting July 8 through August 31 from 6:30-7:30 in New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s garden, 33 William Street, downtown New Bedford. Audiences of all ages will enjoy this lively and fun band. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved indoors.Slow Boat Home is an Americana band that plays a mixture of jug, country and blues music spanning the first half of the 20th century. All members share lead vocals, accompanied by harmonica, mandolin, bass, and a National ResoPhonic Guitar. Fans of folk and old-time music are likely to hear something familiar and something new from this eclectic and fun-loving group of seasoned musicians. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The National Park visitor center is located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. It is open seven days a week, from 9 AM-5 PM, and offers information, exhibits, and a free orientation movie every hour on the hour from 10 AM-4 PM. The visitor center is wheelchair-accessible, and is free of charge.
