Whales, Tales, and Sails

Stand up and get moving with the park’s Whales, Tales, and Sails story hour!

This free, hour-long program is designed to help inspire your child's imagination and curiosity. Children ages 0-5, can interact with the stories and activities, and their parents or caregivers participate in the program with the children. Every Friday morning at 10:00 AM from September to June, join us in the Corson MakerSpace, located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. The program is hosted by professional storyteller Jackson Gillman who provides experiences for children to listen to stories, sing songs and enjoy hands-on crafts.

Story Hour in a National Park

Story hours and libraries go hand-in-hand, but did you know you could participate in a story hour held in a national park? The park saw the need a few years ago for story hours in downtown New Bedford and within the National Park boundary. With hours of planning and discussion, Whales, Tales, and Sails was created to fill this need. Story hours provide opportunities to introduce children to stories, songs, interactive activities, social skills, reading skills, dancing, hands on experience, new vocabulary, and more. It also illustrates how parents or caregivers can interact with their children.

Not only are parents or caregivers and children learning and engaging within the program, but you are brought into New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. This park stands out for being a partnership pak in an urban area, that works together with partners to create several opportunities and experiences for families. Jackson Gilman

"Stand-Up Chameleon" Jackson Gillman magically transforms himself into a wide array of eccentric characters through his many talents as mime, actor, songsmith and storyteller. As adept with children as he is with adults, his interactive performances are seasoned with skillful dialect, song, dance, mime and sign language. Shining through Jackson's wit and extraordinary versatility is his bemused, warm-hearted honesty. Jackson's humor evolves from finding that which is funny in human beings trying to be human and often tripping over their own being in the attempt.
