PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. – The National Park Service invites public comment on an Environmental Assessment for the Suitland Parkway Trail Extension and Naylor Road Safety Improvements project. NPS will evaluate options to extend the existing Suitland Parkway Trail and improve safety at the Naylor Road intersection, while protecting the parkway’s historic and scenic character. The project also aims to improve walking and biking connections to the Naylor Road Metro station and reduce safety risks at the intersection, where 10 people have died since 2011, most during low-light conditions.

Built in 1944, Suitland Parkway is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. National Capital Parks - East manages Suitland Parkway as one of its 17 park units.

NPS completed several technical studies to support planning for the project, including:

  • Suitland Parkway Trail Extension Feasibility Study: Evaluated multiple trail alignments and recommended a route that runs parallel to the parkway to reduce environmental impacts.

  • Safety Assessment and Implementation Plan: Assessment identified high vehicle speeds, limited lighting and other factors that contribute to crashes. It recommended a mix of engineering, education and enforcement strategies.

  • Cultural Landscape Report: Documented the parkway’s historic significance and informed design options that balance preservation and safety.

The project would close key gaps for pedestrians and cyclists traveling between nearby communities and the Naylor Road Metro station. It also would address documented safety risks at the Naylor Road intersection, especially in low-light conditions.

NPS will accept comments for 30 days and seeks feedback on the alternatives in the Environmental Assessment, potential effects on park resources and other ideas that should inform the design and environmental analysis.
