The National Park Service (NPS) is looking for your feedback on draft concepts for the future of Shepherd Parkway in Washington, D.C. You’re invited to share your thoughts at a public meeting on November 7th, online or by mail.
Originally acquired to construct a parkway that would connect all the civil war forts in the District, Shepherd Parkway today includes 205 acres of forested greenspace and sites such as Parkland, Fort Carroll and Fort Greble. As part of our commitment to revitalizing and enhancing national parkland in Southeast and Southwest Washington, D.C., the NPS kicked off a planning effort for Shepherd Parkway in July.
The NPS has developed multiple draft concepts for desired future use and enjoyment of Shepherd Parkway. These concepts propose ways to improve safety, connectivity, park conditions and the ways people use and enjoy Shepherd Parkway. The concepts were developed based on input from stakeholders, neighbors and the community, as well as a recent ethnographic research study conducted in cooperation with Howard University’s Department of Sociology. This study has illuminated connections and traditions that help us to better understand community perspectives on Parkland.
