The National Park Service (NPS) invites you to share your vision for the future of Shepherd Parkway. As part of our commitment to revitalizing and enhancing national park land in Southeast and Southwest Washington, D.C., the NPS is kicking off a planning effort for Shepherd Parkway with an open house on Wednesday, July 10. You’ll also have the opportunity to submit your ideas by mail or online.
Originally intended to be developed as a parkway, Shepherd Parkway today includes 205-acres of forested greenspace and sites such as Parkland, Fort Carroll and Fort Greble. During this planning effort the NPS will evaluate existing conditions and consider desired future enjoyment of these areas. The NPS will develop recommendations that will improve safety, connections to neighborhoods, park conditions and ways for people to enjoy the park.
This concept plan will be informed by stakeholders, neighbors, the general public and a recent ethnographic research study conducted in cooperation with Howard University’s Department of Sociology. This study has illuminated connections and traditions that help us to better understand community perspectives on Parkland.
Attend the open house
This open house will provide the public with an opportunity to identify issues or concerns the NPS should consider as we prepare a concept plan for Shepherd Parkway. The open house will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 6-8:00 p.m. at the Bellevue Neighborhood Library (115 Atlantic Street SW, Washington, DC 20032). NPS staff will be available to address questions about the project.
For additional information regarding the meeting, or to request special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting, please contact Mike Commisso, at e-mail us.
