Celebrate Women’s History Month at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site (NHS). The National Park Service invites you to visit this recently refreshed and reopened historic site, which is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Admission is free.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House NHS was the first headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and was Mary McLeod Bethune’s last home in Washington, D.C. From this house, Bethune and the NCNW spearheaded strategies and developed programs that advanced the interests of African American women.
The National Park Service commemorates Women’s History Month with two special programs at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House NHS:
Women’s Suffrage in Black and White
Saturday, March 9 & 16 2019, 11:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. (1 hour)
African American women have a long history of involvement in the suffrage movement. This program highlights the leaders, their interactions with primarily white suffrage organizations and their work with African American communities and institutions. The program will conclude with a facilitated discussion on the challenges and successes both races faced in their pursuit of the right to vote.
