Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri)

Steller’s Jays are commonly found in forest environments throughout the western United States. Their plumage has display variations of bright blue, dark blue, and black feathers. Jays are omnivores and feed on a wide range vegetal, insect and animal matter. They are known for aggressive behaviors and will raid nests and food caches of other birds. Jays have distinctive triangular-shaped crests with long black feathers that extend vertically from the head. These raised head feathers are most often displayed during mating displays or while taking hostile actions.
