Spotted Towhees are sparrows with black and white speckled wings, rufous (red brown) sides, and a white underbelly. They are found in the western United States. Towhees are ground feeders, and forage on the forest floor and underbrush and in low shrubs. Towhees use their strong, conical bills to crack seeds and fruits and feed on available insects in the summer. The sounds of Spotted Towhee foraging can alert birders to their presence.
