Mount of the Holy Cross

Mount of the Holy Cross

William Henry Jackson
August 24, 1873

Rumors of a mountain with a large cross etched into its side had circulated for years, but it was Jackson who first photographed it and confirmed its existence. He and his assistants camped overnight on the cold slopes of Notch Mountain to capture the perfect shot- one of the most famous of his career.

The small waterfall at the bottom of the photograph is a later addition.
