Catching Up Horses in California

Catching Up Horses in California, April 1867

William Henry Jackson
November 25, 1867

Finding himself penniless in California, Jackson labored without pay for weeks for horse trader Sam McGannigan in exchange for passage back East. Though Jackson noted it "knocked the knees out of my trousers and the toes out of my boots," the brutal work earned Jackson a spot on the months-long horse drive to Omaha.
