Photographing The Mount of the Holy Cross

Painting by William Henry Jackson
1936
Mount of the Holy Cross was first photographed by William Henry Jackson in 1873. For years, stories had circulated of a mountain with a large cross etched in its side. Jackson climbed the western slope of the Rocky Mountains to prove its existence. It was his most famous photograph. He later painted the iconic image in watercolor.
