he Washington Association actively collected historical "relics" for the site. For a period of nearly 50 years, they assembled an important collection of books and manuscripts. The Association actively encouraged scholarship and hosted an annual meeting on Washington's birthday. Among the distinguished speakers who addressed the membership were Woodrow Wilson [1903], Henry Cabot Lodge [1916], Carl Van Doren [1944], and Douglas Southall Freeman [1951].

he Ford Mansion has had many visitors. In the 1890s visits ran about 9,000 a year; by 1930 there were over 31,000. Many came on trains chartered for the day out of Newark and New York City. They found a lot to see. Rooms were filled with weapons and military gear; maps, prints and paintings; furniture from many eras; and a dazzling variety of 'curiosities.' These formed the basis for the museum and archival collections at Morristown National Historical Site today and are featured in this web exhibit.
