Parfleche Bag
This ’isáaptakay or Indian suitcase was a common form of carrying case used on the Columbia Plateau and Northern Plains. It was used to store and transport food or other material. It was also commonly exchanged for other goods. The bag is made from rawhide and painted with mineral-based paint, in a geometric design typical of the Columbia Plateau. This particular example is smaller than the average size case of this type.
