Beaded Gauntlet
By the end of the 19th Century most Nez Perce men had adapted Euro-American clothing styles, but adapted them to their taste. They wore trousers, beaded buckskin vests, beaded cloth vests, cotton shirts and scarves around the neck, reservations hats. Gauntlets were usually reserved for special occasions, such as parades, rodeos and pow wows. They became very popular as sales items for tourists visiting the reservation or as gifts for fellow Tribal members. They often exhibited patriotic or other colorful motifs. These are marked both with owner’s name and date of manufacture being incorporated into the beaded design.
