Collected by Marcus Whitman, this basket is made of coiled bundles of cedar root. It is imbricated using beargrass (light color) and cherry bark (dark color). In the US, imbrication was a decorative technique used only in the Pacific Northwest. The lid is held in place with buckskin ties. A similar basket was collected in 1841 by the Lieutenant Charles Wilkes’ Expedition.
