Without access to phones or telegraphs, letter writing became the most practical means of keeping in touch with friends and family who had relocated out of Manzanar. When Joe Nagano went to Chicago to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology in early 1943, his brother Towru and sister Masako began a regular correspondence that produced hundreds of letters over three years. They kept Joe up to date on the "goings-on in camp."

On April 15, 1943 Joe's brother wrote:
"We are going to celebrate our one year anniversary in our block on Saturday, April 24th and Mr Ikari has obtained permission for us to go to the mountains, so everyone is in for a lot of fun." Read the entire letter to find out about the plane crash near camp and the loyalty questionnaire.
