Hubbell was an outstanding salesman and active promoter of Navajo weaving. He was committed to high quality weavings, and discouraged the use of cotton warp and most chemical dyes in favor of vegetal dyes. Hubbell even unraveled older blankets to show the weavers how the pattern was done. He was instrumental in introducing ‘Ganado’ red.

Don Lorenzo introduced the concept of rug design paintings to promote sales. Burbank painted Navajo rug designs that Hubbell showed prospective buyers. Burbank may have fueled Hubbell’s interest in art and artists, as there are no written references indicating any such interest prior to Burbank's visit.
