Guest Bedchamber

The Guest (northwest) Bedchamber is furnished to the 1890-1910 period, a period at Hampton when the Ridgely family fortunes had begun to wane.

For much of the 19th and into the 20th century, the room was called the "White Curtain Room" because white muslin window and bed curtains then in use. The room also highlights the era and accomplishments of Helen Stewart Ridgely (1852-1927), wife of Captain John Ridgely (1851-1937), a highly accomplished woman, noted as the author of two books in addition to numerous civic activities and an active role in managing the estate.

The installation featuring travel related items suggests that a female friend has come to visit Helen and will be staying in the guest room. In the winter the seasonal display suggests the visitor will go foxhunting with the Ridgelys, a favorite family pastime.
