By mid-June 1944, with D-Day a success, the Allies gained a solid foothold on the continent from which to launch further attacks on German forces. Eisenhower was the hero of the day. Back at home his portrait appeared on the covers of numerous news magazines, including Time and Life. The August issue of the National Rifle Association’s publication, The American Rifleman, featured a color photograph of the Supreme Allied Commander.
