Mamie had ample opportunities to use this suitcase. As the wife of a career army officer, she was constantly on the move as her husband was transferred from one post to another. She estimated they lived in 37 different places before finally settling down in Gettysburg. During her husband’s 1952 run for the Presidency, she lived out of a suitcase while accompanying Ike on an eight week whistle stop campaign. In their retirement years, Ike and Mamie would pack up and move to Palm Desert, California for the winter.
