In 1898, Miss Barton first titled her book, The Red Cross, A History of This Remarkable International Movement in the Interest of Humanity. By 1899 the book title was shortened to The Red Cross in Peace and War.  This comprehensive history covers the origins of the International Red Cross movement, founding of the American Red Cross, and its work from 1881 – 1898. It also focuses on the Spanish-American War.  Barton often gave signed copies of her book as gifts.
