Corn
Ancestral Pueblo
Pueblo III - Pueblo IV AD 1200 - 1550
Corn or maize was initially brought into the Bandelier area about 3,000 years ago by Archaic peoples. By the 1100s when Ancestral Pueblo people settled in the Bandelier area, their culture was based on farming. Their main crops were corn, beans, and squash. Dried corn kept for years. Most types of early corn were smaller and had far fewer rows of kernels than modern varieties. Corn was the dominant food staple. It is still central to Pueblo ceremonial dances and art.
