Mess Kit
c 1860

Robert E. Lee carried this mess kit during the Civil War. The folding brown leather case includes a knife, fork and spoon.

A soldier’s mess kit was perhaps the most important item he carried next to his weapon; an army travels on its stomach and the only way it can move and be effective is to be well fed and healthy.

Leather, velour, elastic. Utensils are steel with ivory handles. W 21.3, L 18.1 cm
