c 1945-1960
Patch worn on sleeve of Bureau of Prisons correctional officers’ uniforms, between 1939-1969. The patch depicts the seal of the Bureau of Prisons [sometimes called “FPS,” for “Federal Prison System”]. The open book represents the law, the key represents security, and the sunburst [or rays of sun] at the top represent education and rehabilitation.
