Clarence Carnes, Sam Shockley, and Mirian Thompson
Clarence Carnes [left], Sam Shockley [center], and Mirian Thompson [right], the three inmates who survived the 1946 “Blastout,” on their way to court to be tried for their role in the bloody escape. The attempt claimed the lives of Officers Harold Stites and William Miller. Shockley and Thompson were found guilty and sentenced to death, being executed at the gas chamber at San Quentin in December 1948. Carnes, found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment, was paroled in 1973.
