The Clearinghouse serves as a point of information for park and non-park museums and others for the exchange of information on objects needed to fill gaps in museum collections and objects available for deaccessioning.
The Clearinghouse helps to:
- Advertise collections needed for acquisition
- Advertise collections available for deaccession to other parks or to non-park entities
- Complete accession and deaccession transactions
The Clearinghouse helps non-park museums and others to:
- Advertise collections needed for acquisition
- Advertise collections available for deaccessioning
Clearinghouse Publications
The NPS Clearinghouse uses various means to advertise objects outside a park's Scope of Collection Statement. These include the Clearinghouse Classifieds newsletter, an electronic bulletin board for parks, and a World Wide Web feature. By advertising through the Clearinghouse, parks can determine whether objects are needed by other parks before transferring or exchanging objects outside the NPS. Likewise, parks can make known their acquisition needs and the availability of objects for deaccession.
