During the first months of 1878, Edison and his associates exhibited his "talking machine" at his Menlo Park Laboratory in New Jersey, at public gatherings in major cities, at the Smithsonian Institution, on Capitol Hill, and at a White House audience with President Rutherford B. Hayes. While in Washington, a proud Edison had his portrait taken with a tinfoil phonograph at Matthew Brady's photography studio.
