Monocacy National Battlefield in cooperation with the Civil War Trust will host the 16th annual "Park Day" cleanup on Saturday, March 31, 2012. This nationwide effort will help to restore and clean America's battlefields, shrines, and cemeteries. The event is underwritten with a grant from HistoryTM and has been endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Park Day promises a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. It is an important event that, year after year, proves to be a success thanks to volunteers.

Monocacy National Battlefield will conduct grounds maintenance of the historic Thomas House, which is the new park headquarters. Currently, the grounds are only accessible to the public during special events. Volunteers will assist with removing invasive plants, pruning bushes/trees, and mulching to help maintain and preserve the landscape.

Volunteers will meet at the Park Visitor Center at 5201 Urbana Pike; registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Preregistration is required and volunteers should be 10 years of age and older. All volunteers are required to be present for the safety briefing at 9:00 a.m. Interested parties that fail to attend the safety briefing will not be permitted to participate.

Dress for field work; trousers, long sleeves, and sturdy shoes are recommended. Each volunteer should bring a pair of work gloves. Water will be provided throughout the day. In the event of inclement weather the event will take place on Saturday, April 7, 2012. For preregistration and further information call Brett Spaulding.
