Ever wonder how the holidays were spent by Civil War soldiers or their families at home? Many of the holiday traditions and customs of today began in the years leading up to and during the Civil War. Prior to the war the holidays had become a time to spend at home with one's family.Holiday cards, carols, special foods, gifts and trees all date back to the late 1850s. But then the Civil War began, and the country and families were torn apart.

Monocacy National Battlefield will join with the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium and 21 other historic sites in Frederick County to mark the start of the holiday season. At Monocacy, partake in the Civil War holiday merriment that will deck the halls of the historic Thomas House between noon and 5:00 p.m. Children are invited to make a homemade ornament similar to ornaments that were made by children 150 years ago.

Parking for this event will be at the Thomas Farm parking area located at 4460 Baker Valley Road. For additional information call 301-662-3515.The event is free.
