FREDERICK: Over Memorial Day weekend, Monocacy national Battlefield will set up a memorial flag display honoring those soldiers who fell during the Battle of Monocacy. The park has hosted this impressive display of 2,200 flags ( one for each of the casualties for the battle) for the past seven years to pay tribute to the individual sacrifice of those soldiers who gave the "last full measure of devotion" in service to their country. On Memorial Day at 3:00 p.m., the park will participate in a National Moment of Remembrance. Park staff and visitors will pause for one minute of silence to pay tribute to the men and women who have died in service to our country, followed by a rendition of Echo Taps and a short ranger program. On Saturday and Sunday, a park ranger will present programs on the history, meaning and significance of Memorial Day. The programs will take place twice daily at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. All programs are free. For more information or updates, please visit the park's website at www.nps.gov/mono, see us on Facebook, or call the visitor center at 301-662-3515. The visitor center is located at 5201 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD 21704. Operating hours are daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. |
