On March 31, 2012, Monocacy National Battlefield will join with other Historic Consortium museum sites in the official opening of the spring season. Emphasis of the event will be on Frederick, Maryland's unique role in the upcoming 150th anniversary of the 1862 Maryland Campaign. At Monocacy National Battlefield learn how Civil War Armies used flags to communicate. One-hundred-fifty years ago the Union signal station at Sugarloaf Mountain, just south of Frederick City, was instrumental to Union victory in September 1862. Spotting the Confederate invasion of Maryland they remained at the station relaying enemy movements until captured on September 6. When Sugarloaf Mountain was recaptured by Union forces the signal station was reestablished and relayed important messages during the September 14 Battle of South Mountain. Join living history volunteers from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for hands-on demonstrations about the Signal Corps. The event will take place at the Monocacy National Battlefield Visitor Center, located on Maryland State Route 355, two miles south of Frederick, Maryland.
