FREDERICK, Md.: Did you know that slavery continued in Maryland after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation? Join the National Park Service Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Best Farm and 3 p.m at the C. Burr Artz Library to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the 1864 state constitution that ended slavery in Maryland.

This two-part program will explore the social, economic and personal impact of emancipation in Frederick County. At 1 p.m. at the Best Farm, a park ranger will discuss the end of slavery in Maryland. The program will continue at 3 p.m. at the C. Burr Artz Library where local teacher and historian Patricia Washington Geddes will present the incredible journey of discovering her own history through her ancestor Alice Frazier Boulding.

The Emanicipation Proclamation only freed enslaved people in territories taken over by Union armies. During the Battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864, enslaved people lived on the five farms affected by the battle. The battle actually stiffened the resolve of Maryland legislators to require voters in the 1864 fall elections to sign a loyalty oath. This, combined with the military vote, tipped the balance allowing a new state constitution to pass that freed the enslaved. Maryland was the only border state to end slavery during the Civil War.

All programs and events are FREE. The Best Farm is located at 5106 Urbana Pike, Frederick, Md. (GPS location). The C. Burr Artz Library is at 110 East Patrick Street, Frederick, Md.
