Salzaria mexicana, Salvia dorii, Yucca brevifolia, Yucca bacatta, Opuntia Erinacea, Opuntia acanthocarpa.

Type of spring: Qanat providing water to drinker.
Vegetation: At qanat: Crabgrass (coverage: 15 x 7 m), Ericameria linearifolia (coverage 15 x 2 m); Joshua tree scrub. Shrubs in the spring area include: Lycium, Atriplex, Prunus fascilata, Eriogonum fasciculatum (the latter heavily browsed). At drinker: Catitails, algae, various grasses.

Site Condition: highly disturbed
Type of disturbance: Qanat, which provides water to livestock about 110 m downhill.
Type of infrastructure/diversion: Main source of water appears to be from the qanat; dug just below and west of a barely protruding knob of granite. Qanat dimensions approx 4’ x 4’, and approx 3’ to bottom of excavated hole. Covered with 2” thick planks. Qanat has water about 17” deep. Qanat is in a local depression (probably dug out). The overflowing drinker in the corral is 15 x 4 ft and 1 ft deep and is equipped with a flow-valve.

Type of disturbance: This spring is a deep pool in a cracked rock formation which has been historically enlarged and measures now about 9 ft long x 3 ft wide x 6 ft deep. In January 2010 the water was about 4 ft deep.
Type of infrastructure/diversion: At the outlet of the pool a 1 foot dam had been built including an outlet for a pipe. Historic mining infrastructure, including an old pump, is located in the vicinity of this water feature.

Vegetation: Eriophyllum wallacii, Baccharis sergiloides, Senecio flaccidus (common composite shrub), Ambrosia eriocentra, Tamarisk, Rumex, Lycium, Erodium cicutarium, Salsola, Populus fremontii (seep in wash). Eliocharis parishii, Hordeum sp., Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens -- not extensive, only in disturbed or otherwise bare soil; Yucca brevifolis; Lycium; Atriplex; Larrea (rare); bunch grass, heavily grazed so that no flowering or fruiting parts; Opuntia's, composite shrub (original shallow well).

Type of infrastructure/diversion: Seven feet down from enclosure of the original shallow well are 2 2” x 10” planks embedded in the ground covering/protecting some visible surface water (approx 1” deep). A section of disconnected 3” diameter metal pipe is encrusted in the ground and adjacent vegetation. The 2nd original shallow well is a 4.5’ square hole, supported with timbers. Full of water to near ground level, nearly 3’ deep, anoxic smell, very dark. These shallow wells feed the Kessler drinker located in the coral, which, in turn, is located in the wash, adjacent to the ranch.
