50,000 Students Served on Floating Classroom September 16, 2011 On September 20, 2011, the 50,000th student will board a riverboat for "Big River Journey." Media are invited to join us on this important day. Students on Big River Journey cruise the Mississippi River between Harriet Island, St. Paul, and Fort Snelling State Park, enjoying on-board and land-based science learning stations. Led and begun by the National Park Service's Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Big River Journey is a partnership with eight additional groups. Make Minnesota Farmwise a Success! August 26, 2011 The MN Idea Open is a grant-making competition focused on creative ideas to solve water issues in Minnesota. Our idea is the Minnesota FarmWise program. This program will partner experienced water-friendly farmers with participating farmers to expand farmer-to-farmer education about water-friendly practice good for production goals and environmental goals. Join us in making the Minnesota FarmWise program a success by voting for our proposal. Invasive Carp In the Mississippi August 11, 2011 Invasive carp are moving north up the Mississippi River. Because of their potential to disrupt the ecosystems of rivers and lakes, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is working on a plan to stop them as far down stream as possible. Willow Tree at Camp Coldwater to be Removed August 10, 2011 After great consideration, the National Park Service has decided to remove the willow tree, located at Camp Coldwater. The event will be held Wednesday, May 4th, from 3:30-7:30p.m. at the Merriam Park Library in St. Paul. Volunteers Build Canoes for Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures March 17, 2011 Visit the NorthWest Canoe Company (NWC) during a volunteer work time and you will hear the rhythmic sound of sanding and scraping punctuated by bursts of conversation and laughing. Volunteers with the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area are building three voyager style canoes for use in the Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures programs. Coon Rapids Regional Dam Commission Report Posted March 3, 2011 The Coon Rapids Regional Dam (CRRD) Commission has published its recommendations regarding future options for Coon Rapids Dam. The commission was established by the 2010 Minnesota legislature and included community representatives, elected officials and representatives from federal, state and local agencies. Inaugural Cache In Trash Out Event a Success! August 21, 2010 The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area hosted its first ever Cache In Trash Out event, calling on geocachers to pitch in and help restore the floodplain forest habitat at Crosby Farm Regional Park. It Was a Busy Spring! Bald Eagle Nest Survey Completed March 18, 2011 Chances are high that you've seen a bald eagle along the Mississippi recently. The National Park Service is studying bald eagles to determine the persistence of various chemicals in the upper Mississippi River, the Saint Croix and the Apostle Islands. These studies provide insight into how many eagles are here, and the health of the river and related ecosystems. National Park Service Announces Availability of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Bureau of Mines (Coldwater) Property The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area's Alternative Transportation Plan (ATP) will identify how to connect non-motorized, transit opportunities along the Park's 72-mile long corridor with existing and proposed transit facilities on both sides of the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities metro area. Waterbird Survey on the Upper Mississippi River November 18, 2009 The survey is a multi-year study of migratory waterbirds along the upper Mississippi River and a partnership of the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Mississippi River Fund and the Prairie Island Indian Community. Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day October 3, 2009 On Friday, October 16th the National Park Service and Trips for Kids will team up for a youth mountain biking event at Battle Creek Regional Park. The event is a great opportunity for youth to enjoy their nearest national park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Park rangers will provide information about the park`s plants and animals. Minnesota's National Park Legacy to Premiere at Bell Museum September 24, 2009 Be among the first to preview Minnesota's National Park Legacy, a locally produced film about the legacy and national significance of Minnesota's national parks. The event will be held at the Bell Museum of Natural History on Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. Mississippi River Challenge 2009 July 24, 2009 Join river enthusiasts and National Park Service rangers on and along the river this weekend at the Mississippi River Challenge 2009. This paddle first began in 2004 by Friends of the Mississippi River to appreciate and protect the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities area. The one or two day event starts this Saturday, July 25th. Mississippi River Trail Grand Opening June 15, 2009 The grand opening of the Minnesota section of the Mississippi River Trail and the newly remodeled City House will take place on June 6, 2009. After the celebration the National Park Service will host a 9-mile Bike to a Ranger ride along the Mississippi River. June 14, 2009 Join teams of scientists and volunteers of all ages on June 12-13 from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday for the 2009 BioBlitz. Teams of biologists and volunteers will fan out across St. Paul's Crosby Farm Regional Park to identify and catalog as many species of plants, animals, lichens, fungi as possible within an intensive 24-hour survey.
