Schedule of Activities for November 16:

  • 9 a.m. Camp Opens – Walk among soldiers as you explore a Civil War camp. Interact with them to gain a better understanding of their lives.
  • 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Musket and Artillery Demonstrations – Experience the roar of cannons and the fury of muskets during the first of three demonstrations.
  • 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Battlefield Tour – Explore the battlefield with a ranger as they guide you through the events that occurred on January 19, 1862.
  • 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dress Like a Soldier – Learn about what a soldier would have carried with them and what they would have worn on the battlefield. Both adults and children are welcome.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Civil War Music - Listen to the songs of the Civil War era.
  • 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Evolution of Small Arms Demonstration - Listen to a Park Rangers as they dive into the technological differences between the flintlock musket, percussion cap musket, and sharps rifle, and how those differences impacted the outcome of the Battle of Mill Springs.
  • 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Artillery Demonstration – The thunderous sounds of cannons will again echo during the second demonstration of the day.
  • 2 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Battlefield Tour - Traverse the field with a ranger to discover more about the events of the battle.
  • 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Civil War Music – An encore presentation for songs of the Civil War era.
  • 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Musket and Artillery Demonstration – A final bellow will sound over the battlefield, marking the last demonstration of the day.
  • 4 p.m. Camp Closes and Battlefield Tour – Survey the battlefield with a ranger during the final tour.

More Information

One of the newest parks in the National Park System, Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument, is free and open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Battle of Mill Springs was the first major United States victory in the Western Theater of the Civil War, breaking the Confederate defensive lines across Kentucky, capturing the attention of the national press, and providing a much-needed morale boost for the United States.
